Going after the mess they have created is a daunting task, which you may have to live with each day. It’s best to get rid of them before they grow in numbers.

Facts About Squirrels

There are several types of squirrels. According to National Geographic, squirrels come in more than 200 species. The ones often seen in yards are the flying squirrels, fox squirrels (or tree squirrels), red squirrels, gray squirrels, and ground squirrels. Like rats and other rodents, squirrels love to gnaw on almost everything using their teeth. Their diet includes nuts, acorns, flowers, tree sap, baby birds, small insects, and even flowers.

Squirrel Reproduction

Squirrels are mammals, but their mating process and gestation period are different from other animals in this classification. You would want to get rid of them as soon as possible because they multiply quickly. A fox squirrel breeds at all seasons and can give birth to up to seven baby squirrels after the 45-day gestation period. Flying squirrels mate only twice each year and welcome two to three baby squirrels. On average, all the other squirrels give birth to two to three baby squirrels.

Getting Rid of Squirrels

Squirrels settle in a place where there are food and water. Therefore, the first step is to limit their access to any food they may eat in your yard. Clean tree droppings regularly and place them in a wastebasket with a tight lid. If you have a bird feeder, you can use a squirrel guard to make it difficult for squirrels to get into the seeds. You may also add safflower seeds to the feeder, as squirrels find them bitter. Clean the ground below the feeder to remove seeds that have fallen out.

Do this by using a cage with fine mesh to avoid small squirrels from escaping. Empty cages are not attractive so make sure you place good bait inside. Relocate trapped squirrels to another location.
